Lets Celebrate The Phuket Vegetarian Festival
This month Phuket hosts its famous Vegetarian festival (or the Nine Emporer Gods Festival). This is a once a year event focused around the ninth Lunar month, and is certainly one of the more extreme celebrations that you are likely to see in Thailand.
When Is The Vegetarian Festival On?
The festival begins on Sunday, Oct 15th – Tuesday, Oct 24th
During this period, devotees and those wanting to celebrate the festival will don traditional white clothing and begin to assemble around the major shrines around the island. The celebrations include certain acts meant to invoke the gods, which includes body piercing, firewalking, and more. Some of the body piercing is not for the feint hearted but it is an unforgetable experience and a great example of what faith and religion mean to the Thai people.
